Swachhta in NCL- An ongoing imperative #NCLmoments

In Northern Coalfields Limited, cleanliness is an ongoing imperative.  Throughout the year, cleanliness drive is ensured across the company.  Various outreach and awareness programmes are also undertaken.  Here’s a glimpse of  few activities from throughout the year.

PEDAL  FOR PLANET–   Like in all things, in cleanliness too, Northern Coalfields Limited envisions a macro picture.  Cutting back upon emissions is surer way to ensure clean planet. Stats show 7 kms of cycling saves 1 kg of carbon dioxide emission compared to car. CMD NCL  Shri P.K.Sinha along with Director (Technical/Operations) NCL Shri Gunadhar Pandey, Director (Technical/Project & Planning) NCL Shri P.M.Prasad and Director (Finance & Personnel) NCL Shri N.N.Thakur chose to go cycling recently.  Watched and joined by huge crowd,  they cycled through NCL Headquarters premises along the township to a local bus stand spreading the message of clean planet far and wide.

MEDICAL CAMP–  “Cleanliness is paramount. Cleanliness propagates health. Health propagates prosperity  says CMD NCL Shri P.K.Sinha. The occasion was health camp followed by cleanliness  & plantation drive organised in a village near a coal producing area of the company.  There, CMD NCL Shri Sinha addressed a gathering and inspired  people to take initiatives to ensure health and cleanliness. He assured them of all the help. By doing so he appeals every citizen’s sense of responsibility shedding light upon power of each individual to effect the change.

And there was one more profound learning during the occasion– Learning of how great leaders have this knack to sense ground realities and offer right environs for course correction. Profound to watch  Shri Sinha calling upon everyone to treat ‘cleanliness as an end-goal’.  He summarily overrides  ‘cleanliness as  passing arrangements’  made  well before an event.

Emphatic, very emphatic indeed. Watch stream 1.19

PAINTING  EXHIBITION– NCL also organised a painting exhibition targeting children as change agents.

SWACHHTA RATH– By launching cleanliness chariotNCL touched many lives not only across its operational areas but throughout the district Singrauli.

At the end, some more thematic visuals—

The CMD NCL and the Functional Directors of NCL  seen cycling.

I appreciate the good work being done. But as a coal miner how do you justify cutting back on emissions.Let’s accept coal is dangerous for planet. Right from polar ice to ozone layer, harm is imminent. If anything really needs cutting back it is coal. Stopping coal mining is best way to protect the planet.

  2. Purvi

Then let’s stop everything. Let’s stop using internet. Let’s stop using electricity and whatnot! And let’s do nothing until ozone layer replenishes itself.

Ankit, being a coal miner comes with lot of flak. But when someone opens an argument/discussion, honestly, I don’t know where to begin from. Had it been a one-on-one, I would have chosen to remain calm. And I am sure you know that 🙂 But writing it here, you’ve stirred up a hornets’ nest. I choose to handle this one. Loose or solids, here in coalfields we do lot of handling. 🙂

On a serious note; See. Please understand. No one would go scraping countryside without purpose. We have a purpose. Our purpose is to ensure energy security of the nation. We mine coal because we are demanded of that. We are demanded to take care of ever increasing energy appetite of the country. And we are proud to be in our role.

The manufacturing energy that goes into making cement, the construction energy that goes into building houses, the technological energy that goes into using internet, the electrical energy that goes into keeping our homes lighted–Manufacturing…Construction….Technology…Electricity. Everything, everything traces its origin back to coalfields. It’s all coal. In present scenario, with existing statistics coal dominates.

Just sit back and think. And you will get your answer, Ankit. Think deeply and you will know, coalfields are the origin of everything, rest all is built upon it. I am sure you must have heard our Chairman, my CMD and others on various occasions. Just see their body language, their words, their voice modulation while they speak. Indeed, we take lot of pride in ensuring energy security of the nation. Hope you get my point, Ankit.

Dominance of coal is because of lack of adequate alternative sources of energy.Once that happens coal will be phased out.It is necessary for you all to prepare yourselves for that. The world has been changing at very fast pace.I admire your upfront attitude towards your industry which definitely is rare for a coal person.Howsoever disturbing ground realities are still taking pride in one’s work is best way to work.

My summary points. 3 of them-

    1. As of alternative sources, please know it is not going to happen overnight. But that doesn’t mean we are in denial. Don’t confuse our pride with our denial. Our leadership is keen on that space and germane ventures are already in pipeline.

    2. Ground realities are not disturbing. Name one place, one household, one industry, one country, or more so one continent which is completely free of problems. None, right? So how do you expect coal industry to be exempted? Problems are there and so are solutions. I learnt from my CMD to say, “The very existence of problem suggests there exists a solution too.”

    3. As someone who has umbrella view of the industry, I am sure you must have seen mining operations quite a few times. But Ankit, seeing and visiting a place is one thing. Living and absorbing it is whole another. I usually don’t meddle with fact files put by you and alike for I trust you. If you say something, it must have some weight. Likewise, you have to learn to trust people who put good words out about mining. We two–the analyzers & the believers– can co-exist, if only none of us try to assert one’s existence over another. Both are equally needed to run systems, to do things, to do WORK.

To be truthful, whatever you say is not going to impact my view of coal mining. But probably next time when I will be writing about mining,I will be more mindful of people behind operations.I will keep speaking and writing for my cause. I will keep doing my work. You do yours.

  6. Purvi

Oh ! I am Zen. If I get you to think even once about the humans behind operations, I am Zen. Thanks for saying so.
